Prof. Maaike Hajer (Dutch language arts and applied linguistics, Nijmegen University) specializes in the role played by school subject teachers in academic language development in multicultural schools. Hajer has been affiliated to HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht since 1993, and as a professor since 2002. She was awarded her PhD by the Catholic University of Brabant in 1996 for her dissertation entitled ‘Learning in a second language: interaction in a multilingual secondary school classroom’. As post doc she contributed to the project 'Interaction in two multicultural mathematics classrooms. Processes of inclusion and exclusion'(Deen, Hajer & Koole red. Amsterdam, Aksant 2008) before becoming professor at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences.
In her research she bridges the gaps between academia, teacher training and the school field through identifying stregths and weaknesses in current practices, designing principles for teacher training and following teachers development as language oriented content teachers. This is reflected in the many publications, including academic articles as well as study books for teacher training and teaching materials and weblectures.
Maaike is a pioneer in the development of language-oriented education in the content areas for various educational programmes and contributes to innovations and multidisciplinary research both in the Netherlands and in Sweden, being a speaker of Dutch and Swedish.
She was appointed as a guest professorship at the Institute of Swedish as a Second Language at the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) in 2008, worked as visiting researcher at the Multilingual Institute of Stockholms municipality 2009-2010 and is since then visiting professor at Malmö University.
Maaike Hajer works as a professor with the theme Professional development of teachers for Language-Oriented Content teaching. Her main activities in 2014 included:
- Malmö: Research and developmental work on the design and implementation of language-oriented content education in Swedish primary and secondary education. Numerous presentations and workshops. Supervision of a.o. Maria Kouns (Physics teachers designing language oriented lessons with Johan Elmfeldt and Camilla Thurén), Marie Sjöblom (Cooperative learning in mathematics, with Tamsin Meaney) and Maria Rubin (Multidisciplinary cooperation for second language learners at high school , with Jonas Aspelin)
- In Malmö she is leading the development of two modules within the national professional developoment program Läslyftet on language oriented teaching in social sciences and in sciences.
- Institute for Curriculum Development, Enschede: research and development work ; chairing the national network Platform Taalgericht Vakonderwijs (see www.taalgerichtvakonderwijs.nl).
