Optimizing self-management

Patients are expected to play an active role in resolving or mitigating their own health problems. This involves making decisions and also changing their lifestyle, where necessary, and working to adopt healthier behaviours.

Professionals (e.g. nurses and physiotherapists) need to support patients in managing their own lives, teaching them how to do this and motivating them to adopt healthier behaviours. But research done by this research group shows that self-management by the patient does not always realize its potential. Because professionals seem to play an important role in promoting self-management among their patients, there is an important role for education here. How can education ensure that (future) professionals are better equipped for this important role so that self-management can achieve the results that it should?
